We are here to help you solve some of the problems you may have, (especially in the mornings.) We are here to make your life easier.
Does my bum look big in this? Not the normal start to a blog, but anyone who asks a child on the spectrum that question, better be prepared for the answer. I think one of the joys of having a child on spectrum is that they very rarely lie and are totally non-judgemental. If I asked my daughter that question, she would say yes and if I asked her why, she would just quite bluntly say “well it does” she has been known to say things to others who don’t know her and I have been in some embarrassing situations because of this.
You want to know how we can make your life easier, (especially in the mornings) If you have a daughter and it could well be the same with boys, they don’t actually tell you a lot. Hence the reason I had to clear my daughter’s wardrobe out after her diagnosis and after I had read everything I could on autism. She never told me that she did not like certain fabrics, and yes we did have to take labels out, but I thought that was a common enough trait.. Also in her last year at school, I had left it to the last minute to get her uniform and I came home and apologised most profusely about having to get her short sleeved school shirts, it turns out she would have preferred these all along. If she had told me I could have gotten her those.!!!!!
So back to how we can help you, if you have stayed awake long enough to get this far. The company was started because of Kirsty and we had to design and get prototypes manufactured, so for the first 18 months all we sold was seamless socks which had to be brought in from America. Again I am always going on about “when you have met one child with autism, you have met one child with autism”. My daughter did not have a problem with socks unless they had a line of glitter around them. At the start though, the amount of people who asked for socks was unbelieveable. Our main focus was on post primary children as it was the first time they would have to wear proper trousers and shirt.
If you have come across us before you will know how our products are different and if not check out our website. Suffice to say we have had a lot of return business but it hasn’t been easy, no funding etc does, put a massive strain on you. Although when people get back to you and tell you the difference that our shirts and trousers have made, we cannot give up.
We now do a lot of other products, such as books, many you can go through with your child, ear defenders, tieless shoelaces, funky t-shirts and weighted items.
From today until St Patricks Day, we are taking 20% of our black fully elasticated school trouser’s in the heavier fabric up to size 17/18 which in our climate some might prefer.
I will also be doing a book review in my next blog. I have been sent one today called Special Kid to Super Kid. I haven’t read it yet but it looks great and has tips how to get your child through many of the difficulties they face daily.
Many of you will know now, what school your child is going to, but don’t worry, an uncomfortable uniform doesn’t have to be, something else for them to worry about.
If you have taken the time to read this, thank you and if you want to know more please email me at meta@spectrasensoryclothing .com and our website is www.spectrasensoryclothing.co.uk
